Ajmal kasab is finally held guilty today for the 26/11 incident which shook Mumbai because of the brazen manner in which it was carried out. Indeed it took 17 months and a lot of tax payer’s money to get to the verdict which was more of an open and shut case. The legal course which the judiciary has taken was certainly time- consuming but at the same time the only way forward.
It’s very easy to nail the verdict before the verdict is actually given out. Law looks at the evidence it doesn’t take into account the emotions and the fever related to the case. That is exactly the reason why it’s a victory for the judicial system in India. We did see a lot of TV footage showing Kasab and his aide, but that painfully does not act as evidence. People's testimonies are required for this which then acts as evidence.
So what should be the maximum punishment for such an inhuman act? Is capital punishment the only way ahead?
Considering the fact that kasab was only a pawn and the main perpetrators are still at large is not great news. Tomorrow there will be 10 more Ajmal kasabs hanging out at CST. Will providing death to Kasab kill terror?. We have to look for preventing the malaise before it gets to us. Our state intelligence which clearly failed to detect the event should be equally responsible for the act.
My heartfelt feeling for the relatives and their friends of the deceased. How painful would it have been to experience those last moments where you are neither on this part of the fence nor the other. What it would have been to be happy at one moment and struck with fear the very next second. Death penalty is the only option left here because that is what will seem to calm all the anguished media and the public in general . But will death of Ajmal kasab get the loved ones back. Will it even deter the main perpetrators from staging another such event? I don’t think anyone would agree in the positive for the above questions. Martyrdom leads to heaven that is what is instilled in these terrorists and Kasab I believe would be happier to die once than die a hundred times. My opinion is that he should be given the strictest of life imprisonment where he should be made realize the ghastly nature of his attack.
In retrospection we have to understand the deeper root causes of such an attack, why has it been possible for any person to go on a rampage like this. What goes in making of a Ajmal Kasab.
I guess the answer lies in the question itself.
